The Conference
The London Foundling Hospital was granted a royal charter on 17 October 1739 for the ‘Maintenance and Education of Exposed and Deserted Young Children’, following a seventeen-year campaign by its founder, Thomas Coram. Meticulous records were kept by the governors during the two hundred years the Hospital took in children, resulting in a treasure trove of archival material stretching over eight hundred linear feet and now housed at the London Metropolitan Archives. The records hold tantalising glimpses of the lives of the women and children who came into contact with the Hospital, as well as
the staff, governors and inspectors involved in the running of the institution. Alongside records relating to the musical and artist connections of the Hospital, these sources have long fascinated researchers from across the world. This conference aims to bring together the global community of Foundling Hospital researchers for the first time, providing time and space to share their wide-ranging work, stimulate opportunities for collaboration, and suggest new avenues of investigation into the archives of the London Foundling Hospital.
